play.house.westplay.house.east3D.play.houseThis project is progressing nicely and we’re having an awful lot of fun with it.  play.house is a residence addition for an actor and a media designer – creative types!  Our parti (or guiding idea) borrows from the world of theatre where each room is a set and the act of moving through the house the play.  It’s a tight lot, but a perfect east/west access is ideal for a sustainable home.  We’re using the south face for passive heating and the north for cooling.  We’re going to try to use a solar hot water system and have a great location for the tubes on the south face.  We’re proposing stucco (contextual), corrugated metal (texture + historical reference) and cement board/cedar (residential scale) for the exterior finishes – all are durable, but the metal may require a leap of faith on for one of the owners as it’s typically a more industrial product.  We love the metal’s textural contrast with the relative homogeneity of the stucco and it’s unexpectedness in a mature neighborhood.

I’ll post more updates as the design progresses….
